2. When should I schedule doctor, dentist, and other appointments?
Schedule all these appointments during the month between the end of the 3rd term of Kamp and Move-In Day (September 13), during Thanksgiving Break, during Christmas Break, or during Spring Break. Plan ahead for these things because you shouldn’t have to miss class for appointments scheduled months in advance.

You will not be allowed to nail holes in the wall to hang pictures or paintings. Keep in mind that the rooms are fully furnished and space is limited, but some storage containers may be helpful.
Also on campus are the classroom, workout facility, dining hall, student lounge, coffee shop, and computer lab. There will be wireless Internet in the dining hall and coffee shop, and Internet is provided in the computer lab. There will be TVs in the dining hall as well.
What to bring:
- All bedding (including pillows) for a twin bed

4. What do I wear?
Student Appearance
As a member of the Kanakuk Institute, our students are held to a high standard---one that keeps with the traditions of Kanakuk Kamps. In this spirit of excellence, the Kanakuk Institute requires a dress code.
Men’s Dress Code
When attending class, male students are expected to wear nice shorts (not athletic-type) or slacks. Jeans with no holes or frays are acceptable. Shirts need to look neat and professional. Collared shirts or plain colored shirts may be worn. Printed t-shirts and sweatshirts, sweat pants, or white undershirts will not be allowed. You may wear matching athletic jacket and pant sets. Tennis shoes, sandals, and leather flip flops are acceptable (no plastic flip flops). No knit caps, stocking caps, or baseball hats in class. All students should be clean-shaven at all times during their contracted period at the Kanakuk Institute (September 14th-April 20th). Haircuts should be clean cut and hold to the standard set forth by Kanakuk Kamps, KAA, and K-Life. Earrings for men will not be allowed. The key is that your appearance is sharp and professional to the teachers who come in and to the community. Remember, we can be salt and light to a lost world through our excellence in Christ.
Women’s Dress Code
Women should reflect a casual business appearance. This may include nice shorts (no shorter that mid-thigh), blouses (sleeveless acceptable with modest armholes), skirts, dresses (no shorter that 3 inches above the knee), slacks, and nice warm-up/athletic sets. Please be sure in everything you wear that you maintain modesty. Sandals are considered acceptable as well as tennis shoes and leather flip flops (no plastic flip flops). Unacceptable apparel includes printed t-shirts, overalls, any kind of sweatshirt or sweat pant, and frayed or holey jeans. The Kanakuk Institute will enforce all standards that are held by Kanakuk, KAA, and K-Life.
Branson Weather:In the fall the temperatures will range from about 50-70 degrees; in the winter from 20-50 degrees; and in the spring from 60-80 degrees. It will snow probably 3 or 4 times over the winter.

5. Where will I eat?
Many, but not all, meals will be provided at the K-Kauai dining facility each week. The cost of the meal plan is included in each student’s total tuition. You will have access to a refrigerator and microwave. There are no cooking (i.e. stovetop) facilities.
6. Do I need a car?
You don’t need to have a car, but it is encouraged. The internships and part-time jobs you have might be located several miles from campus. If you are not bringing a vehicle, please let us know so we can try to place you in a more convenient internship.

7. Can I have a job while at the Institute? Are the internships paid?
Yes, you can have a job while at the Institute as long as it does not interfere with class-time or your internship. Many people have part time jobs at restaurants or at the local YMCA. Internships are not paid, however some of the ministries will reimburse gas mileage and meals with kids. We request that no job take more than 10-15 hours a week.

8. What job opportunities are there?
Branson is an easy place to find part-time work due to the number of shows, restaurants, stores, and the opening of The Branson Landing (a new strip of shops and restaurants close to campus). We would advise that you begin to look for a part-time job even during the summer. If finances are a major issue for you, we encourage you to look into finding the living arrangements to move to Branson a month early after Kamp and start your part-time job.
If you are participating in John Brown University, we do not recommend a part-time job due to time constraints.
Here are a couple places students have worked in the past and the businesses’ contact information:

9. What do I do after the Institute?
The Kanakuk Institute is committed to exposing you to the many contacts we have established so that you have somewhere to serve after graduation from the Institute. We have a large network of churches and ministries looking for “Kanakuk style” leaders. Our main goal would be to place as many students as possible into our sister ministry K-Life.

10. What do students do after class each day?
Students fill up their afternoons by hanging out with kids through their internships, meeting weekly with their Institute accountability groups, and enjoying time with their host families as well as each other. On campus, you can always find students working out in the gym, playing basketball in our indoor or outdoor courts, and hanging out or studying in the coffee shop or lounge. The incredible community built as the students learn, eat and live all together ensures that there is always something special going on.

11. What are the weekend and traveling policies?
Students will have internships and Institute activities during most of the weekends. For this reason, we want to keep students on campus as many weekends as possible. We ask students to submit an absence request form in order to obtain permission to leave. Our desire is for you to be committed to: 1.) studying the material you are learning in class, 2.) your internship and 3.) class fellowship. Family always comes first in our policies, so we encourage students to get with us regarding any special needs they have.

12. What is the total number of students at the Institute?
Class sizes have ranged from 30 to 80 students depending on the number of qualified graduates each year.
top ▲
13. Can I defer my student loans?
Probably not through the Institute alone. Once you graduate, you typically have 6 months until you have to start paying on your college loans. There are ways to qualify for deferment, and you would need to check with your lending body as to what the qualifications are. The Kanakuk Institute is not yet an accredited Institution for purposes of meeting the Post-Secondary Education deferment clause.
However, if you are enrolled in John Brown University, you can apply for deferment through their program.

14. What about medical insurance?
The Kanakuk Institute REQUIRES that you have adequate medical insurance prior to attending. The Institute cannot provide insurance to you because of financial/liability reasons. We recommend you call Sonya Gaunt with Barker, Phillips, and Jackson at (417) 881-8464. She will look for the best plan for you financially and has helped several students in the past. We require you to take care of this BEFORE you come to Kamp this summer. Although rates vary, a single male policy costs roughly $100, and a single female policy costs roughly $200 every month. It increases based on age, marital status, and medical history.

15. Is there any way to still be included on my parent’s insurance policy?
You will have to check with the insurance company first. Upon request, we can provide you with a letter stating that you are a full time student. Some insurance companies are satisfied with this.

16. What about the weekly schedule?
Click here for an example of what your weekly schedule will look like. All activities on this schedule Monday through Friday are required Institute activities. What you do after these activities will vary based on your internship, Institute play-days, retreats, and personal preferences. We will provide you with a calendar at the beginning of the semester to help you plan your weekends and work schedules.
